Tornado or Not?

Posted on 16:34 by Unknown

So... Was it a tornado? There are some pictures that look a little suspect, but I'm not 100% sold just yet. The NWS will be out tomorrow morning to investigate the damage and they will make the final call. I could be wrong, but I do not think there was a warning prior to the alleged touchdown. If it was a tornado, it was weak.

Looks a little ragged, but I'm sure the NWS will survey it and will have an update tomorrow. This pictures came from Pleasant Plains. Here's the message that came with it:

Props To TVN

Posted on 18:40 by Unknown

The TVN had a great day today and they are still chasing some good storms this evening. In case you missed David Drummond and Ben Holcomb today, here's what they saw! David is a chaser for Raycom Media station, KCBD, and Ben was the first chaser I spoke to (minus our own) on February 5th in Arkansas.

No injuries or damage and great video. That's the perfect chase! You can always ride along with them by clicking here.

Doppler Detected Speeders!

Posted on 17:36 by Unknown

There's some good radar refraction taking place from the Memphis radar site this evening. Meteorologist Phil Baker at the NWS pointed it out to me and I captured some images on StormTRACK Doppler 8. Look at the "blips" just north of Blytheville on I-55. That's not rain. That's traffic!

Radar does not operate like a laser beam in a straight line, but it bends vertically and horizontally and speeds up and down in response to the atmospheric conditions. (I believe the air density is the main driver to this phenomenon.) When the wavelength is slower in spots, it tends to bend toward the slower portion of the wave. This is called refraction. When it does this, you can occationally see traffic on the interstate!

The second image below shows the "velocity scope". we typically use it to detect rotation. If you notice the bright pink areas, that's the traffic. Phil says he clocked some people going 82 mph... LOL I wonder if the NWS can write tickets? :)

Pretty cool huh?

Here Comes An MCS...

Posted on 06:21 by Unknown
Are you wondering what an MCS is? It's a Mesoscale Convective System. More or less, it's a big glob of thunderstorms. The big glob of thunderstorms is heading this way! Click here for more info on MCSs.

LOTS of Rain

Posted on 09:27 by Unknown
This a radar estimate of the rain that has fallen across parts of Region 8. Look at the swath of pink/purple from Harrisburg to Fisher to Bradford. That area may have picked up between 6-9" of rain!!! Below is a wider image...

It's crazy that places like Forrest City and Memphis have not seen much at all! More wacky weather!

Maybe I Should Have Chased...

Posted on 09:48 by Unknown

My friend and boss, Hatton Weeks, and I were going to go chasing in NW Oklahoma this past weekend. In fact, these tornadoes were very close to our target cities. In addition, these were the guys we were going to try to interview! While there were not A LOT of tornadoes this weekend, there were a couple that were very photogenic. Take a look at this video... I had it on mute, so please excuse any language. Hopefully it's G rated.

It's probably good I did not go though... I got a lot of yard work done.

It Was Nuts At The Convo!

Posted on 20:30 by Unknown
I was live at the Convo this evening for the Taylor Swift concert and it was crazy there! I have never seen so many people excited about a concert! Thanks to Twitter, I got to show some Tweakpics on the news tonight.

Jom Frigo, Bill Pressly, and I got to checkout the stage setup prior to people entering the Convo and I was shocked that the stage was not done shortly before 6:00!!! The chairs were not even on the floor! That got it done though....

Cool Sky in the Morning!

Posted on 06:59 by Unknown

Venus an Mars are going to create something cool in the sky. We had a little preview of it this morning and Sarah said she could see it on SkyCam, but apparently it is going to be even cooler tomorrow morning. I plan on getting up early! I have a meeting a 7:00 AM, so my schedule is going to mesh well with the sky show. To read more about this, click here.

WindCAST?

Posted on 16:49 by Unknown
So, I have a question. Is the WindCAST useful in my weathercast? I'm not going to tell you if I like it or not.... I just want your opinion. Click on the comments and let them fly. I look at viewers as "customers" and I want to know what the customer wants. That's a concept I got from a great weather guy in Nashville, Bill Hall.

FYI-WindCAST projects the winds across Region 8 using our in-house computer model. It projects the winds speed and direction over the next 48 hours.

If you just want to vote, there is a poll on the right side of the page!

Dr. Phil and the MJO... Not That Dr. Phil

Posted on 19:09 by Unknown
I have become a big fan of Dr. Phil Klotzbach during this year's Bahamas Weather Conference. Dr. Phil Klotzbach (who actually prefers "Phil") is the guy taking over the famous "Hurricane Predictions" that Dr. Gray has done for years. Dr. Klotzbach has done some new research, which he plans to experiment with this hurricane season. Here's a short summary of his presentation this year on the Madden-Julian Oscillation
and it's use on hurricane forecasting...

We're flying home tomorrow. It's been an amazing time in Nassau, Bahamas and I hope to post some pictures at some point next week.

Take care,
Ryan

Great Presentation!

Posted on 15:54 by Unknown
Dr. Landsea had a great presentation today at the Bahamas Weather Conference. More or less, his studies show that the warming we are seeing (which may or may not be man-made) have little to no effect on the frequency and strength of hurricanes. The general concensus is that we have had some alarmist in recent years...

Personal pictures will be posted when I return from Nassau.

Video From Today

Posted on 17:49 by Unknown
Here are one of the sessions from today's Hurricane Conference. There was a panel disscussing hurricane coverage from Hurricane Gustav and Ike. The panel included meteorolgists from Houston and New Orleans. During the coverage of Ike, one Houston station flew their helicopter over anyone's home that called into the station and did a phone interview. This had a huge viewer benefit, because nobody was allowed onto Galveston Island... but the chopper was finally allowed to fly over! Here's a summary of that session.

Bahamas Weather Conference

Posted on 14:42 by Unknown
It's been a great conference so far and the Bahamas are beautiful! I got to hear Dr. Gray speak today and it was awesome! In case you do not know, Dr. Gray is the famous meteorologist that puts out a seasonal forecast for hurricanes each year. He's a genius of meteorology. I do not have much time to type and I can't sync up my camera to my computer, so pictures will come later. I may even do a video blog.

Take care,

Eventual Clearing

Posted on 06:17 by Unknown
It's always difficult to forecast "when" the low clouds will erode away. It's probably one of my most difficult forecast challenges. In these situations, I rarely pin down a time when the sun will return. I know at some point today, the clouds will erode away... they just need to "start" theeroding process. Once the process begins, it typically continues quickly. We just need the air to "mix up" a little!

So... the sun will come back today. The big question is "when"....

Pick Up Our Cross

Posted on 04:50 by Unknown
I was driving down Highway 412 yesterday and saw Thomas Moore carrying a cross. You may have seen him on the news Friday, too. When I saw him, I knew I had to stop... take a picture or two... and talk with him. He's carrying this cross to Little Rock! As he walked by the stop sign, it made me think... maybe we all need to "stop" and pick up our cross. Not physically, but spiritually.

We often forget about the suffering of Jesus and go straight to the "Easter" part.... Straight to the empty tomb. On this Resurrection Sunday, let's not forget that Jesus was 100% man and 100% God at the same time. He lived a sin free life, but felt the pain on the cross. We've got to remember the suffering and pain before we celebrate on this great day.

If you meet Thomas Moore on the road, he is going to ask you if you know Jesus. That's why he's do this... He wants people to stop and ask him questions, so that he can ask questions.
His website is: http://www.crosswalkertbm.com/
Have a great Easter,
Ryan
